Jerry, you just reminded me of the "BLUES SWAP" that I meistered three years ago. We had lots of fun talking about the Blues Greats and our favorites. That swap was also memorable in that each of us got a CD of famous Blues Bands music put together by Alan Di Somma.

I can't remember the whole name of your fly, but it was something like "Git Down, Stomping . . . . . .     My fly was the "Dusty Broom". :-P

Wonder if anybody would be interested in participating in BLUES II ??  If so, let me know and I'll meister.   You'd tie a special fly named after your favorite blues band.  For BLUES  I we had around 15 tyers.

I spent a lot of time in Jacksonville , Fl.  (1977 to 1982)

The band lived and  played there a lot. I heard many of the bands of that era

Skynrd, Wet Willie’. Little Feat. the Allman Brothers—and a dozen house band wannabee’s.

It was a real Renaissance of Southern Rock and Blues.

Lynyrd Skynyrd , who the band is named after, was an actual Jacksonville real estate agent.

When I was the fly fishin’ Guru at Travel Country Outdoors I used

their lyric “If you want to talk about fishing, I guess that’ll be alright.” on my

business card

 

 

Of the southern blues bands the early Allman Brothers were my favorite.  I sort of lost them when they went very electric.

But “Ramblin’ Man” and “Silver Dollar” are fabulous.   And they covered some much older blues.

In fact, their covers of Robert Johnson’s “Statesboro Blues” and “I believe I’ll dust my broom” are my two

ALL TIME FAVORITE electric blues.  (They actually attributed the latter to Lloyd Fulsom, who did do a

great cover of Johnson’s song)

 

And speaking of music.  Saw Eric Clapton in person Friday night.  Really great concert.

Robert Cray opened and then Clapton played for 2 ½ hours.  All the old stuff with some more recent

works thrown in.  As I sat there enthralled, it occurred to me that Clapton, more than anyone  else,

has been the keeper of my musical for the past 40 years or so.

 

Every now and again I realize that of all my passions, music is my favorite. If forced to I could do

without bicycling, kayaking, fly tying, and yup even fishing.  Finally I could even go with out

reading.  (boy that would be tough)  But I cannot imagine a life without music.
