Patrick,
One thing you will have to learn to use is the bobbin.
The new bobbins need to be pre-loaded. It would be so
easy to show you but a bit hard for me to explain by
writing. On the old bobbins, you just started the
thread on the hook and let the bobbin hang, it would
retract itself. On the new bobbins the bobbin will
drop down about 18" or so before it will stop. This
leaves that much thread to retract before making the
next wrap.
You can preload the bobbin by pulling out about 12 to
18" of thread then start the wrap. This wastes a lot
of thread and is a nuisance. You can preload the
bobbin by winding the bobbin body against the spring
to preload the spool. Hold spool in the preloded
position (don't let it unwind) and thread the bobbin.
Again keep the spool from unwinding by cupping your
hand around it. Now the bobbin is pre-loaded and ready
to use.It will retract the thread like it should.
After tying the fly, if you clip the thread without
holding the spool to keep it from retracting, it will
pull the thread back through body and you will have to
pre-load again and thread the bobbin. To avoid this,
cup the spool in your hand, clip the thread, take the
tag end of the thread and give it a wrap or two around
the thread button on the far post. It may sound
complicated but once you do it a couple of times, it
comes natural. I am in no way putting down the bobbin,
without it, it just would not be easy to use the
Norvise. I talked to Norm about the bobbins and why
the change. Norm said there was too much spring
breakage on the old type bobbins. Once you get used to
doing the above, it is easy. You will loose the thread
through the bobbin body a number of times before you
get the feel of holding the spool.
If you don't understand all of this, let me know, I
can send you a couple of shots on how I cup the spool
in my hand and hanging the thread on the post button.
