Here is a Sowbug recipe that works well for me here on
the White River.
Hook: Sz 12-16 2X long
Weight: Lead wire or substitute, sized for hook. Wrap
from hook point to one wrap behind the eye.
Thread: to match body color
Tail Appendage: Short strands of Antron Yarn
Rib: silver wire
Body: Antron sparkle dubbing
Shellback: Antron yarn
Front Appendage: Antron Yarn
Tying the Sowbug:
Hook in vise, wrap weight wire on shank. Take a length
of Antron yarn and separate the fibers in half for the
smaller sizes. For sz 12 leave it full thickness.
Tie in the yarn right behind the wire wrap, so that a
bit if the tag end extends beyond the bend of the
hook. This will be the rear appendage. Fold the yarn
back over itself with the length of yarn facing back
and over wrap with thread at the tie in point. Bring
thread in front of this wrap, tie in rib wire. Apply
dubbing to the thread and wrap a loose dubbed body.
Pull the Antron over the top of the body and trap just
behind the hook eye. Don't cut the tag end yet. With a
smooth jaw pliers, flatten the body horizontally. Wrap
the rib wire fwd about four wraps and tie off behind
the eye. Cut off the tag end of the yarn leaving about
1/8" for the front appendage. Do the same at the tag
end you left at the bend of the hook.
With a tooth brush or whatever you use, brush out the
body dubbing to lake the legs. With one clean cut with
a sharp scissors, make an angle cut from about 1/8"
below the hook eye to about 1/16" below the body at
the hook bend. This will give you the legs that look
like they are moving when the bug is in the water.
I like olive, black, gray and orange are also good
colors.
