I think the rules are there to get you started in the right
direction. As with most things, once you know how the material has to
behave / end up, you can start bending the rules. Ever watch great
casters casting (rather than teaching)? They almost never do what the
basic casting courses (or the more advanced courses for that matter)
tell you to do. The one exception was a clinic by Jason Borger in
West Yellowstone I once crashed; he really showed some of those rule-
breaking advanced tricks that great casters use when they actually
fish...
