The normal recommendation is to play fish reasonably hard and revive and
release quickly, however I had occasionally experienced times when I did
this and had difficulty reviving the fish. On one particular occasion on a
still water pond, I caught a good sized rainbow while fishing from a float
tube, but despite my long and careful effort to revive the fish, it died. It
was not deeply hooked and all I can attribute this to is lactic acid build
up during the short fight,

Trout kindness?

Which technique in C&R is easier on the trout?

1.  Stout leader, play fish harder, land quickly, revive, release.

2.  Fine tippet, light rod, play fish softly but longer, land, revive,
release.

Pro's and cons:

Play the fish hard with strong tippet, and the hook does a lot of damage to
the trout's mouth.

Play the fish soft and easy, wear it out totally, but not physically damage
it so much.

Mitigating factors:

Warmth of water
Strength of fish (size)
Health of fish
