Neville - My standard is to use only metal sewing machine bobbins. The few plastic ones I have are used only to spool short lengths of special colors of thread or floss used to tie a specific fly. When they break, I replace them with metal bobbins.

Yesterday, I transferred an entire spool of Gudebrod 10/0 tying thread to a metal sewing machine spool. To my amazement, the sewing machine spool took all 225 yards of the 10/0 and could have taken more. I put it on an old Matarelli short stem standard bobbin but have not tied with it yet. I then set about transferring another spool of Gudebrod 10/0 to a clear plastic sewing machine spool. About halfway through, the pressure of winding this tiny 10/0 thread was enough to cause the spool to fracture and one side of the plastic sewing machine spool detached. The spool was brand new. So it is metal spools only from now on! Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. Canada
