Hi Reuven ,
For better hooking quality and stronger hook try using Mustad 9479 or better
yet ,Daiichi 1510 . I use mostly a size #16 hook but if you like the #28
natural fly size use either of these hooks in a #18. When tying just use
the same proportion materials as it you were tying a ,example a 28 fly on a
18 short shank hook. Over fifty years ago in the U.K. all midges were tied
on down eye short shank hooks. In both brands ,these hooks are the same
length ,Mustad calls it 5x short and Daiichi calls it 3x short. but each
size is the same hook length.
You may look at Tobin's Little People in hellekson .com The hackles may
be a little long as picture and sometimes the hackle just touches the point
of the hook . Glenn Overton , Libby,Montana U.S.

I am tying on Partridge 28's because I cannot get any smaller hooks. I love
it. Caenids all the way.
DonO's flies, however, are rediculously small and precise. He inspired me
into accepting the "bigger is not necessarily better" theory. I love the
smaller stuff.

Subject: [VFB] Small Fly Syndrome?
Has anyone ever contracted "Small Fly Syndrome" on the list? If not I
think
I have a new disease. It seams that even though 80% of the fish caught on
flies around here are caught on #6 to #12. However, I have almost depleted
all of my hooks from #12 down. It seams that I am more or less "Obsessed"
with tying, and getting better at tying small flies.
Even though I need to fill some boxes with #8 to #12 nymphs and wets I
will
tie one or 2 of a pattern then gradually start working the same pattern
down to as small as I can, or as small as I have hooks for.
I am not sure why I am doing this, but, it is good practice and forces me
to pay attention to details and work my hand more. I think I am just going
to have to hide all my small hooks until I can build up the larger flies I
need.
Has anyone else ever found themselves doing this? Is it terminal??
Just curious.
