Thanks George I Really appreciate that. I love tying, but i do not like the idea of someone saying that my fly is garbage, due to the fact that I have 6 turns of tinsel instead of 5. that to me is not tying, what fish looks at a fly and goes hey i can't eat that fly it has more ribs then the last one i ate! I tie for fun, for the trout i fish and for myself. if I can help someone learn this skill I will, but I think I'll leave competitions to those that tie for artistic pleasure and not fish!!!

Ed, don't be intimidated to do something that you are not comfortable with. I have been tying for 36 years and teaching fly tying at my flyfishers club for 4 years and doing demos for my TU group for several years.

I tie for enjoyment and at a relaxed pace. Competition tying is just not my bag. One of my students entered the PA competition in Harrisburg last year and while he really ties some nice flies, he just couldn't handle the pressure of timed tying. Several members tried to suck me in to entering, but I stood my ground.

The bottom line is to do what you are comfortable with.

I tie flies and fish for trout for relaxation and enjoyment. If competition is what I want, I would play golf or enter bass tournaments.

Just my $0.02

Hi everyone,

I have a little delema. there is a fly tying competition coming up, but i'm a little nervous about entering it. I have been tying since I was four (I'm 28 now), but I still do not think I'm good enough to enter. My buddies, who I taught to tie, have all entered a fly, but as the deadline approaches I feel kinda worried. see, I have never tied traditionally before, that is with set proportions. I just tie what I feel the fish will bite, and away I go. I guess I feel I'm just not that good. any suggestions? has anyone ever felt like this or am I just being paranoid? ed
