Hi George , We been tying at the same number of years and the rewards we get
surpass any competition. George.remember seeing a student catching their
first trout on a dry fly. The lives we change ,what rewards when we see how
we have change lives bring families together and fly fish and developed
friends and close friendship that otherwise would be possible. Then the
rewards getting the Army Corps of Engineers to change their minds that
canalization and draining ditch tactics don't work ,while learning to tie
flies got more interested in creating insect population, developed a 50 /50
pool and stream flow racial .Then the rewards ,seeing that I have pass on
the tying skills of those that taught me and now see others ,my students
,are now passing it on and also from others they have learn from. How many
times ,we have seen our students getting involve and taking a active pare in
Trout Unlimited ,Federation Of Fly Fisherman ,local get together and other
fly fishing groups, and like those that you may have influence to go to
Mansfield in Pennsylvania and other great schools ,getting involve in a
fishery degree.
George , My hometown is Elmira ,New York and the reason I spent allot of
time fly fishing Potter and Tioga County. Move to Vestal,N.Y. where I got
into teaching fly tying and was the few first people in T.U. to have a fly
of the month. Got to know the wonderful tiers around Roscoe,New York before
there was people showing up. Tied at some of the first gatherings at Roscoe
and also tied at the Rod and Gun Club in Galeton Pa. on Pine Creek. And
Steve at Fisherman Paradise Fly Shop started to teach ,using my style of
tying the thorax dry fly and is in his catalog today. The list is much longer
then this ,but wanted to let you know how I was connected .

Ed, don't be intimidated to do something that you are not comfortable
with. I have been tying for 36 years and teaching fly tying at my
flyfishers club for 4 years and doing demos for my TU group for several
years.
I tie for enjoyment and at a relaxed pace. Competition tying is just not
my bag. One of my students entered the PA competition in Harrisburg last
year and while he really ties some nice flies, he just couldn't handle the
pressure of timed tying. Several members tried to suck me in to entering,
but I stood my ground.
The bottom line is to do what you are comfortable with.
I tie flies and fish for trout for relaxation and enjoyment. If
competition is what I want, I would play golf or enter bass tournaments.
Just my $0.02

Subject: [VFB] I want to enter a tying competition....
Hi everyone,
I have a little delema. there is a fly tying competition coming up, but
i'm a little nervous about entering it. I have been tying since I was
four (I'm 28 now), but I still do not think I'm good enough to enter. My
buddies, who I taught to tie, have all entered a fly, but as the deadline
approaches I feel kinda worried. see, I have never tied traditionally
before, that is with set proportions. I just tie what I feel the fish
will bite, and away I go. I guess I feel I'm just not that good. any
suggestions? has anyone ever felt like this or am I just being paranoid?
