"DonO" Wrote; There's a project for you, Jimi. Make one up. Yes it is, sorry this is so late, just got in from Amanda's 16th birthday party. All had a good time.
Now, back to the question at hand. Yes, I have actually been thinking about this. But, "First", I need help in comprising a list of readily available hook manufactures. Then, I need to build a list of all the styles of hooks they make from #12 down, and the sizes they have in each. The next step, (or at the same time), compile a list of all manufactures of leader material. Then get a list compiled of the type, (material leaders are made of), and sizes commonly available. Then, the last part, and probably the hardest, would to get 2 sample hooks of each style and manufacturer, with an attached label as to advertised size and type with model number, and a 12 to 24" sample of each manufacturers leader material in each size. (Note, the reason I thin the length is important is to not only use it as a fit test, but a pull through test as well to verify consistency over the length, IE not fat spots). If the group would be willing to help me in numbers 1 and 2, the lists. Then I can start working on getting samples of each and doing the tests. I think the simplest format would be a simple spread sheet that would list leaders down the side and hook sizes by man and type across the top. Then one could just scan the types of fly hooks they tie and "Know" the largest average leader size they can safely use in that particular hook. I think it would be a benefit to know if you could only use a 6X of one manufacturers leader in a particular hook eye, but, if you went to brand B in a particular material you could use a 4X in the same eye and have more strength for those difficult fish or situations. Just something that has been working on my mind the last few cold days. And "If", I could get all of the lists made and samples of all the materials I think I could have it done and in a usable format before the spring fishing starts. What do you think Mr. O?? Does it sound like something that would be useful to the Fly Fishing community? I am willing to do the work and log the information if it is a worthwhile project. If so, anyone want to help me start compiling the needed lists so I can get to work? Just another thought. Jimi
