Chuck,
A slow rod bends most of the rod length, a fast rod
bends mostly at the tip, a medium action rod bends
from the tip to the mid and a parabolic rod bends all
the way into the grip. A soft rod is better for heavy
flies but slowing down the cast is what is important.
The line has to straighten out on the back cast before
the fwd cast is made. If too slow, the back cast will
drop and loose its speed. This can be overcome by
casting upward so that the line does not drop too low
in the backcast. Timing is very important as is the wt
of the rod you are using. You can't cast a big heavy
fly with a rod that is too light to cast it.
As I said in the last post, this is what works for me,
others may have another way of doing it.
I dislike heavy flies so I don't use them very much
but I do use big bass bugs.
