Jeff: Good comparison... Yes, when I used the $1.78 a spool Wal Mart
(Shakespeare) special, vs when I bought good spools of Spiderwire I COULD
tell a difference.. Thanks, Chuck

Chuck, it's been my experience that there is a big difference in quality.
When I first got into the sport, I read that the way to buy your initial
gear was 1)buy the best line you could find 2)buy the best rod you could
afford 3)spend what's left on a reel. It's that important. I'm sure that you
can tell the difference in spin-casting line given the opportunity to try
both ends of the spectrum, given your experience with that gear.

Tom: I was wondering the same thing you mention.. Are these really better???
Or is it just added smoke and mirrors and more money for the basically the
same line???? Do these companies hire chemist and/or engineers to make up
these lines??? Anybody know??? I mean.. If I buy a $19.95 spool of line, and
I bought a $59.95 spool will I REALLY be able to tell which was which in a
blind test??? Thanks, Chuck

Subject: [VFB] New fly lines
I've noticed ads in the fly fishing books for new fly lines. Cortland
has its new "Precision" line which touts Species Specific lines and
tapers; Rio claims their new ingredients "Agent X" and SFT combined using
"Fusion technology" make the best floating line in the industry. And I
also remember reading about a new line "specifically designed for today's
faster rods" being sold by someone, but I can't remember who.
Has anybody tried any of these new lines? Are they real improvements or
is it just typical marketing hype?
Has anyone found a brand or type that they feel is significantly better
that its competitors?
Tom
