. ........I now choose to
buy one-piece knotless tapered leaders over the counter. For price, and
time involved, it is easier for me.

Chuck,
I do the same as Larry. I use Air-Flo tapered leaders. In the salt I have
not found anything as effective

For 20+ yrs however. I used this formula for salt water ldrs. I got this
from Jon Cave.

The 9' Formula is :

                  60% butt,                           10%  ,        10% ,
20% tippet

                     30lb                                20lb
15lb         8-12lb          20-30lb
00-00------------------------------------XXX----------XXX-------XXX---------
------> shock tippet
        >           65 inches                 <>    11 "   <>    11"    <>
22"             (if necessary)

00-00 = loop to loop
XXX=back to back uni

For bigger prey, you can increase the line size. As Jon explained it the
two mid sections hinged the leader and made the flies turn over very well.

As already mentioned, use the same brand of leader of material all the way
through.
My favorite over the years was Triple Fish in MONO. In Fluoro, either
Triple Fish or
Mirage.

I realize how unique this might sound, but I simply did not have knot
failure.

Freshwater is of course a whole 'nother story. For bass, a straight 7' shot
of
20-30lb will do. For trout, FUGGEDABOUTIT!!
Fish with Steve Davenport and ask him to your knots. I can't see 6x, much
less tie a knot in it !!
