Jimi,

I can make a quick and easy crayfish by modifying a wooly bugger and adding weight (you'll see why in a moment) and black foam. I weight the fly, tie in the shellback at the hook bend, tie a WB like normal, then split the tail, pull the foam across the body and use the thread to create the segments. My buddy just about had a bowel movement when he saw me tie this in front of him for the first time.

It's just another creative variation of the famous WB.

And now a fly tying question for your Jimi................. if you were
tying a wet fly to simulate crayfish for smallmouth and redeye bass
fishing, what type of material would you use for the tail and shell back?
Any other ideas on tying crayfish would be greatly appreciated. Crayfish
flies are few and far between, but in certain TN streams, it's a major
source of food for smallmouth, trout, redeye, and a host of other fish.
What has been coming out of my fly vise lately looks awful!
