Jack the concept here is tye a fly to fool a fish........ ie the foam can be
compensated for by using weights built into the design of the underbody....to
reproduce the "normal" attributes of a crawfish.......walking along the bottom.
My curent experiments have involved incorporated a standard bullet head jig
into the design..to get it down. The action, comes from the angler. The trick
is to keep it light enough not to scare the quarry..and heavy enough to get
down to the bottom gravel. This is not a fast water fly....... but is a killer
on bass and big brown trout..... they love crayfish !!!! (P.S. the floatation
allows the front to ride up like a defensive craw...very natural appearing.....
and it conceals the lead head in the tail.

I don't understand one thing about this whole thread. Every LIVING crawfish
I've ever seen was on or near the bottom, yet foam floats. You are are either
not presenting the fly realisticly or else you are weighting it too heavily to
get normal actions. Furry Foam would be better, but ... still? How do you get
it down?

I understand....... try the crafters foam sold at Walmart....(kids
crafts).... i use it to form beetles, hoppers and assorted other
dragonflies/hardshell insects. This is the high density foam...not seat cushion
stuff. Costs .48 per 1 foot square sheet...makes 100's of bugs. Adapting it to
your Crayfish.....will send you details. Foam floats well....so I am
experimenting with counter weight to get it to sink right.

Brent,
When I saw the pattern myself, they were using the tan/brown version of that --
cushion foam. I had black/grey from computer hard drives that we had bought at
work, so I used it. I like the foam b/c it's softer and wraps around nicely.

Great post Garry !!!!!!!!!! Love the pattern.........but why use that grey
"packing" foam...... craft foam easier to build with and stiffer.

After sending Allan, a copy of the pictures I took earlier today, he
said they were clear enough for him to get the idea of what I was
talking about. So here are the links:

As you can see, the foam splits the marabou tail forming the marabou
claws (you can trim these back as you like) and the foam is then made
into the back of the crayfish.
If anyone has any other questions, let me know. I'm still trying to
find where on the net that I found the pattern myself.
