Tony, Chuck Confession time !! When I was learning to cast, I had difficulty with the straight wrist because of years of bass fishing with baitcasters.
I purchased a Joan Wulff wristlock. http://tinyurl.com/3yzrkb worked very well I also picked up a Fly-O. It is actually tougher to use than an actual flyrod. If you can cast the Fly-O, you can cast the hell out of a fly rod http://www.royalwulff.com/educational.html#fly-o As for the stop, imagine you are hammering a nail. When you hit the nail you stop the stroke. I tell my beginners to put their thumb or first finger in top of the grip in line with the rod shaft and press down with that finger while casting. This will help you keep your wrist straight. Another thing you mention, the stop. That is important in getting the rod to load.
