Steve... Good question.. Where I fish, we don't have trout, or trout streams..
I have to fish lakes in my jon boat.. and if you are right near the bank, the
boat will scare off the fish..So, a long cast is what you need to NOT spook the
fish as much.. I FINALLY got the hang of it though.. I was not letting it fully
back load.. I was just out in the yard with a big deer hair fly on a #2/0 hook,
with ten wraps of .020 lead around the head of it, and I can cast it 45-50
almost every time now.. IF, I wait on the back load,And, I cannot do it without
rolling my wrist like Jimmy D..And I FINALLY got my index fanger to stay on top
of the rod shaft LOL...I just had to cast and THINK about the cast, and THINK
about waiting on that back load pull.. I and I'd pull in about 5-6 ft of line
and cast again, letting that 6-8 ft "shoot" through the rod eyes and out the
end.. Chuck

This isn't meant to be a smart remark, but what's the value to really long
casting? Around my area, most of the water is pretty small, and I can cast
across some rivers with a 5 foot rod. I'm really trying to learn about this
stuff, and improve.

Thanks.. I have been practicing this and I am casting farther.. at least in
the yard with a "practice" fly... My wife's car broke down, so she had to
take mine (and it is the only one with a trailer hitch) or I'd go to the
lake and try it out, cause it is 56 and Sunny today with just a very light
    breeze.. Thanks again, Chuck
