Good idea, Rick. For those who have never tried it.
Use a bag of SLF dubbing, as it is really easy to work with and gives lots of variance. Other similar blended synthetic dubbings will work. Anchor a hook to the bend with a smooth, round thread, preferrably nylon if you have it (2lb leader or mono will work fine). Grap a clump of dubbing, tie the end of it down where the fly tail would be tied bown. Watch the VFB video and twist the dubbing around the tying thread until just the dubbing tightens, and without letting go wrap it up the hook. Bingo. Roped tail, segmented. Now UNWRAP IT and play with the rope. Taper, thickness, # of segments, fuzzyness... When you have it down, move on to other materials and sub-techniques.
