Jim,
When it comes to "rope" dubbing I am not the
expert, nor can I show how it is done. I had a quick
session with Don last year but it was too quick with
all that was going on. Regular dubbing is another
story, I can show you that real easy.
I don't use wax and I don't have any problems keeping
it on the thread.
The problems I see tyers doing with dubbing is, too
much dubbing applied to the thread. Take the amount
you think you need, half that then half it again. Now
the biggie, only roll the dubbing on one direction.
"towards the eye of the hook". Here is what I do that
works for me. Spread the dubbing between my thumb and
first finger. Bring the thread over the dubbing roll
the dubbing about a half turn away from the hook eye
and then roll it towards the eye. This is done all in
one motion. Keep rolling the dubbing on the thread
towards the hook eye till it is tight as you want it.
By doing this, when you wrap the dubbing on the hook
shank, the thread twists with the dubbing and tightens
up some more. If the dubbing is wrapped on the thread
away from the eye, it will loosen up on the thread.
When I wrap on the hook, I wrap one wrap forward and
make the next wrap overlapping the previous wrap. This
gives me a bullet proof body.
It is just the way I do it do it, that don't mean it
is right or wrong. It works for me. Now if I want a
body that is real fuzzy, well that is for another
post.
Heck just come to the Sowbug and I will be glad to
show you.LOL
