I guess it's one of a zillion variations, only with a name to go with it. The biologist also said that it was effective if it had half of the wing feathers in black.
One of the original N. Platte River patterns that I was introduced to 30 years ago was the Platte River Special, which was just a feather streamer with a lead-wire weighted body. They originally weren't tied matuka-style or with beads, cones, or barbells ( I don't think they were being used at the time). They had either yellow or brown chennille bodies (many times no bodies- just feather wings). They were tied to imitate a black-nosed dace, so were tied with black thread and had yellow and brown (majority) streamer-hackle wings (usually 3 pairs opposite). The spawning colors of the BND had a lot of red around the gills and up on to the back, so many PRS's had red and orange hackle wings tied in under the brown hackles, so that they showed through. Another variation had a red hackle palmered just behind the head tie. All were extremely effective, and the river record- a 17+ lb brown, was taken with a spinning rod and a PRS. Effective variations abounded, including the Bloody Butcher (yellow/red/yellow wings), Grizzly PRS (brown/yellow/grizzly) and butchers, and brown/black/brown PRS. I'm headed up to Miracle Mile this weekend, so I'm going to tie up a batch of 'Nu-vo' PRS's, using cones, barbells, and crystal chenniles. I'll also use some speckled Cd'L streamer hackles as the outside wing feathers, to give a mottled look like the real McCoy.
