Hans: Thanks.. I do believe that the first option there will be my best option on the small Yellow Jacket Wetfly pattern I'm trying for..I guess my fingers are just too big to hold the "beard" in place normally and tie it in on the #12 hook, and I do not have a rotary vise, so when i turn it upside down it comes loose in the vise. I tried just reversing the hook in the jaws, but since I already have the tail and body in place at that time, it messes up the tail between the jaws, Thanks again, Chuck

Chuck,

On winged wets you can either wrap the collar first, then set the
wing, or you can set the wing, and then wrap the collar in front.

The first scenario is closest to the 'beard' you asked after. I would
wrap the hackle, optionally pluck some barbs from the top using
tweezers, and then set the wing.

Doing a traditional beard hackle, or throat hackle, is fine and
sometimes the only option (like with Blue Jay on, say, an Invicta), but
for most patterns I prefer the look on a wrapped hackle.

Your mileage may vary...

Cheers,
Hans
