Also forgot to mention the reason for just writing "opposite direction". Up or down depends on the charges of the two parts. Fact is that most oftenly the actual lightning strikes UP.

It's just following an Ion trail (lower resistance than air), that has already found the easiest way and "rolled out the red carpet" for him... coming from the opposite direction. Nick
