Sorry for the delay in posting a trip that happened at last Friday evening into early Saturday morning. As I get older. it takes me more than one day and an afternoon nap to recover from an all-night fishing adventure. Tom and I hit the bridge and the docks in New Smyrna on Friday night. Because of the tide, we did not start fishing until almost 11 o'clock. The tarpon were everywhere and they were feeding. Unfortunately for Tom, they were much more interested in my flies than they were in his baits. During four hours of fishing, I had four fish hit, two of which I missed and two of which I hooked up. One fish that I judge to be in the 35 to 40 pound range hit hard and then ran toward the boat. I got a very good hook set, but then could not catch up with it. The "king" jumped once not more than 20' from the boat and was gone. The second Tarpon was a little better fish maybe 50 plus pounds, and that one, came to the boat. I was getting ready to pop the leader to release that fellow, but did want a picture of it in the water. As Tom and I were scrambling for the camera, the fish took one more run and leaped. As I was looking away, I did not bow, and that was all she wrote. First fish hit a red and white " whistler". 2nd fish hit a tan and rust "Tarpon Bunny" We also fished a few docks for trout, and both hooked up with several nice fish. It was quite pleasant on the water, and we did not sweat to death. Although we had not planned to fish through the night, the Tarpon just kept on feeding all on the boat, so we just kept on casting. Then we did a quick stop for breakfast on the way home. I got to bed about 5:00 a.m. and I assume that by the time Tom got finished with a boat. He was probably in bed about 6:30 a.m. Great trip. The Tarpon should be there for at least another month, and I hope to be back as soon as I can. JG __._,_.___
