Don, after catching that big fish and a dozen of its smaller siblings I retired the two flies my buddy gave me. I've scanned them and added them to the site, you can see them at

The lead fly was a simple leach pattern tied with Canadian "spectrumized" mohair in an brown-olive color. (For those not familiar with spectrumizing, it is a word coined to describe the process of creating a dominant color like Brown-Olive by mixing a bunch of colors EXCEPT Brown and Olive). It was tied with a small green ceramic coated metal bead on a size 12 or 14 - 3x hook. It had a short, brown marabou tail, the body was dubbed thin, then the mohair was picked out

The trailing fly (which was the one that caught the fish) was also on a 3x hook, one size smaller than the lead fly. It had a small gold bead, and was dubbed using a material that I have never seen before, which picked out nicely to form a synthetic hackle body. The material looks like ordinary mohair in the scan, but in the light it has a bright, metallic sparkle {Arizona Leech dubbing perhaps?). It also has a marabou tail pulled short with a few strands of root beer crystal flash.

After I "retired" the two battered flies I tied on some of my own that were similar in size and color and kept catching fish.
