Howdy fello fishers

The summer wains, and for some of us, thought begin to turn to images of Fall feeding frenzies of Striped Bass and Bluefish. This years' Striperhhead clave is going to be held from WEd, Sept 26th thru Sunday , Sept 30.

We camp in Nickersons State Campground in Brewster, Mass on Cape Cod. It a great great place to stay, full of all the things that make claves fun, and many local distractions and activities for non-fishers. We have a group site reserved, and the more folks who camp, the cheaper the rates... Believe me dirt cheap. We are also in that site under the auspices of a youth group, and young folks are always welcome and we always attempt to introduce new folks every year.

As we usually, do, I expect we will have a covered dish clam steam as a social event around midday (depending on the tide schedule) on Saturday Sept 29th. We also have a activity born of tradition begun by Aaron Adams and others, and called the Striperhead Survival Kits..... It is part fly swap, part extending a helping hand to newbie flyfisherman who are crossing over from freshwater to salt water. An opportunity to give something back to ourselves and others....

To participate, all one needs do is tie 15 Striper or Bluefish flies to donate, and if attending the clave, they receive a survival kit in return. The kit contains a good selection of flies , as well as other "goodies" that folks donate... such as lip balms, special glass cleaning rags (salt environment really smudges up glasses) low vis sunglasses, tool zippie things, etc. Most of this stuff is promotional give away of objects procured from places of employment that may be useful to the saltwater flyfisher.

And, whenever possible, and original piece of artwork is thrown into the kit..... previous events have featured striper etchings, photoreproductions and the like. This year should be a good one. Having just come from a Bio Illustration program in the middle of the Gulf of Maine, the inspiration was too much, and I had to pump out a striper... Providing the printing venture goes well... ( haven't revved up my epson for a while, I should be including a Giclee print on archival media of this striper piece.

Also, historically, folks who don't or can't attend the gathering feel moved to tie up the quota of flies and mail them in, for field testing and or in an effort to contribute to introducing flyfishemen to the salt. As a thank you for their contribution, they also receive a print. I invite any of you tiers out there who are so inclined to tie up fifteen striper or bluefish flies and mail them , along with $4 postage to

I would need to receive the flies by the 18th of September for them to be able to be included in this years' survival kit. For a look at this year's image go to:

I would also like to extend a hearty welcome to all of those who would like to join us this year, and taste the adventure and excitement of fishing for Stripers and blues with a fly.

Within a short time, a website for Striperheads 07 will be up, and in the meantime any questions about the clave or our approach to saying goodby to the northeast's fishing season, can be answered by myself or any of the dozens of other past and current participants.

Anyone interested in finally scratching that saltwater itch, or desiring to donate to the survival kit, just sing out and we'll accommodate.

hope to see you all there,

Stephen (Splinta)
