Doc is a good friend of mine of many years. He taught me about all those rivers. He's also the one that taught me "stealth" fishing. BTW, I forgot to mention it but Doc is fishing with us, not as a guide but to enable us to fish the Dream and Holy water, on which he has leases. Doc and I are on the Philmont Fly Fishing Committee. Doc is an Eagle Scout and loved the Cimarron area so much from his days as a Philmont staffer, that when he graduated college, he went back and established his guide service. This was some 12 years ago.

Those are great streams, I've fished them both when I lived in Amarillo,TX.
And
the Rio Costilla, cutthoat are tuff to catch and wild. Have a great time.

If you want to get on the private water you need to hire Doc Thompson.

Subject: [VFB] New Mexico Fly Fishing - JIMMY D's Trip

My long awaited annual trip to Cimarron, NM begins next Tuesday, when
two of my good friends here in Waco and I will journy to Cimarron. My
best Bud, Steve Taylor will be at the tackle show in Denver, where the
National BSA fly fishing committee will have a booth, Sunday through
Wednesday. Steve will drive down Wednesday morning. Hope he brings us
some goodies like he did last time.

We'll stay at the Casa de Galvan just south of Cimarron. Missed the
Philmont fly fishing deal last week because our schedules didn't work
out. With the Casa as our base, we'll travel up Cimarron Canyon and fish
the Cimarron on the way up, particularly the "Dream Water" and Holy
Water", which is nice and flat - Great brown trout water, but very
technical and stealth fishing is a must - browns up to 20". Over the
next four days we'll fish the Rio Costilla - classic 8" to 12" Rio
Grande Cutthroat - a small stream that meanders through sweeping green
valleys, and lastly, the Red - rugged moutain water with brown trout
from 10" to 16" fish. Lots of pocket water and deep runs.

On Thursday evening we'll take supper at the famous St. James Hotel,
click on this link. http://www.stjamescimarron.com/ The St. James is
also listed in America's Most Haunted Hotels.

During our evenings we'll smoke some Macanudos, drink some Grolsch beer,
single malt Scottish Aqua Vit and some single malt Irish Aqua Vit and my
favorite, JD Black. Most of the evenings will be nothing more than four
good friends reliving the events ot the day, enjoying each other's
company and having a BS'ing tood time.

I'll be taking my Canon digital camera and expect to get some good pics.
Will file a complete report when we return.

CHEERS !
