Sounds like that might be it.  There was no rainbow coloration.  It
was
more steel blue/gray than brown.  It was the spots (larger up front by
the gills) that made me think (streamside, in the faiding twilight)
that
it was a brown.  This stream is known for its nice wild browns.

I'll send you a photo of that one's sister.  Most thought it was a hen
brown,
But it looked more like a spotted silver salmon.
