hen I use to fish the Beaverkill in November and area streams some thirty plus years ago the season for catching trout was for keeping the trout only, and the area streams was close otherwise.for those that keep their fish...Now they may have change the interpretation since then on fishing this time of the year and some have year long restriction in some areas. You can call the New York fishery department in Cortland if they are still there.and fine out for sure.or call the local game warden.and sometime they don't know Since I was releasing my trout ,I was alone and had the Beaverkill and above Darbee's old place all to myself. I spent a beautiful Thanksgiving Day one year..The native browns turn to such a pretty orange color this time of the year and they are sure beautiful to admire ,take a camera.
HOW TO TEST ROD & LEADER WHILE FISHING.
And don't over play those beautiful trout and get them in as fast as you dare. If a trout is brought in and is laying on it's side you shouldn't be fishing at all.. That's a bad habit to have and you may be killing to many fish ,then you realize. Now to prevent that ? I SUGGEST YOU TO TEST YOUR ROD AND LEADER WITH A FISH SCALE .I taught this for over twenty five years in all my classes . Have your partner hold the fish scale with the fly line attach ,not the leader.Have twenty or thirty feet of line out and put tension on the rod as if there is a fish on the other end.. Ask your partner to read the fish scale and the amount of pressure your using at different bends of the rod and pressures..Subtract 25 % of your leader strength your using and that's the amount of max pressure you can use safely to retrieve that fish after his first run after hooking....If the trout wants to run ,drop your rod tip as he take off and point at the fish.but avoid as much as possible,by not giving them to much Please don't play a trout with two pounds or less.pressure ,where a trout is over fourteen inches ..

I believe all the streams in the Catskills are closed
to fishing that time of the year. I could be wrong.
Contact the Catskill Fly Fishing Center in Livingston
Manor N.Y., they should have info.

All,

I'll again visit the International Fly Tying
Symposium, 17 and 18
November, in Somerset, New Jersey. This time around,
I plan to fish
the Catskills after the show. If anyone can give me
any pointers on
where to go, and where to stay (preferably cheap
motels ;-) ) I'd be
very grateful. And, if you are in the neighbourhood,
please stop by
the show and say hi.

Cheers
