I have hand problems too. But evidently, they're not as severe as
Iain's. My problem is what the docs call "trigger finger". This
happens when the tendon between the joints of one of your fingers or
thumb gets bruised, swells and a small knot forms on the tendon.. When
you bend your finger the knot slides in and out of the "sheath" (
protective covering for tendon), and it will pop. Very painful. I had
both thumbs operated on several years ago. This time it's my middle
finger - left hand and ring finger - right hand. When I first wake each
morning, both those fingers are curled shut and I have to pry them open.
This is what hurts the most. After a hot shower with hot water running
on my hands, they loosen up. You can get trigger finger from hooking a
finger(s) in one of these plastic grocery sacks that is heavy, too much.
Believe it or not, you can get a bruise on a finger and then the knot.
This is called "shopping bag syndrome." So, use your entire hand, not
just one or two fingers to carry the bag. One of these days, when I get
around to it, I'll have both operated on. Doesn't interfere much with
my typing. The biggest problem I have with it is that tying flies
presents a real problem because of my stiff fingers. See - this is
fishing related after all.
Cheers,
JIMMY D
