I guess I got in on the ground floor with furled leaders.  I  was introduced 
to them about 10 years ago.  I haven't looked back  since.  I still have 
what's left of one of the originals.  I prefer  thread leaders to the ones made 
out 
of mono or fluoro.  I pretty much agree  with every thing that's been said.  
I use them for all my fresh water  fishing from trout to bass.  I keep 
promising myself I'll try them in salt  water, but I'd be leery of using thread 
ones 
in the salt.  I use Water Shed  to treat mine, and will sometimes add silicone 
on top of that.  The ones I  use are 5-7 feet long and I fish them with 5 
feet of fluoro  leader.
