You got it right. I took a class from Paul a couple of years ago and
he demonstrated that technique you described. I fished with the twist
nymphs I tied, but they didn't perform as well as a good old size 18
BHPT. Still, it is an interesting technique that makes a unique
looking fly.

When I saw Gary demonstrate the ‘Double Magic’ technique, here’s
what he did:
Waxed his thread with a very tacky wax
“Touch-dubbed” his antron blend dubbing to the thread
Formed a dubbing loop
Twisted the loop with peacock herl and wrapped it forward to create
the body.
This was the basis of his Twist Nymph, and I’ve seen Paul Stimpson
tie the Enchanted Prince Nymph using the same technique.
Gary later subbed pheasant tail fibers or ostrich herl to take the
place of the peacock for a variety of Twist Nymphs. The PT Twist
Nymph in small sizes makes a killer chironomid pattern, by the way.
Hope this helps.

Several years ago I learned to tie this fly and then quit tying it
for some odd reason and now can not remember the specifics to the
technique. I know that it is a LaFontaine fly but do not have any of
his videos or books. Is there anyone that could refresh my memory on
how to tie this technique, it would be much appreciated, a killer
trout fly. I have google searched for pattern and steps but can find
nothing but the fly for sale.
Thanks,
