Well,

when doing the '|cat rom > /tmp/image.rom' step, cat throws an E/A error and dmesg adds another line:
[ 282.690258] pci-stub 0000:01:00.0: Invalid ROM contents
I was told that this step wasn't necessary since I was going to use BIOS anyway.
Or does virt-manager start all machines with EFI?

Best regards,
Ruben

I had a problem similar to what you're experiencing with my ASUS 970. Again, can you check whether vfio-pci logs any invalid rom errors in dmesg when you start your VM (or when you try to dump your firmware like Alex does here : http://vfio.blogspot.ca/2014/08/does-my-graphics-card-rom-support-efi.html )?
