There are (were) a number of serious problems with bttv versions before
0.8.x. In fact, I have never found a version that has not reliably
crashed any computer I have tried it on. This was one of the reasons
(apart from the need for v4l2 support) for writing bttv2. Fortunately,
the 0.8.x versions of bttv seem a lot better, and I will probably
discontinue the bttv2 project (except for pre 2.4.x kernels) in the near
future...
