I found the reset piece of code included in bttv-driver.c. I also added the 
relevant portions of the patch, recompiled and modprobed with the same 
results. I hope to ask the question to Hauppauge UK. They seem to be more 
tolerant towards Linux questions. I will post to the list if I find out 
anything from them. I do know that there is startup code that resets the 
card in Win2k and Win98. It might work if I can figure out what the values 
that code sends.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.  No one here was able to help.  I
eventually gave up and exchanged the wintv pvr for a wintv go fm.

I wish I'd found that patch in my search.  Why don't you try adding that
last btaor back into your kernel and see what happens?
