So I was the lucky one because it worked for me without knowing about the special init sequence. This is missing from my manual Rev. 1.1, Dec. 2000 (22 pages compared to your new 34 pages manual). Of course mine hasn't "allow local oscillators to lock" or "optimize vco selection" chapters either...
