As long as you don't config/compile/install your own kernel:
cd /usr/src/linux
cp configs/kernel-2.4.2-<kernel subversion you are using>.config .config
If in doubt look at /boot/kernel.h to determine which kernel subversion
was selected during installation from CD-ROM. (The one defined as "1".)
