Which drivers don't do this? The open source mga driver doesn't and it's a bug, and there exists a patch to fix it. Fixing stuff like this is trivial and does not require refactoring. The only issue left in my mind is other refresh sync tricks which require handling the retrace interrupt, but this will hopefully be solved soon.
