Well, that's the problem. Patience and perseverance usually helps. It took me a weekend of looking through code, analyzing what was going on, putting printk statements in there to see what function was called when, to find the problems and get my card to work. Gained me a lot of insight into how the drivers interact with the i2c stuff.
