"best" may also be a quite hard group of requirements to achieve.
Stable working version of compilers, libraries and assemblers.

- binutils - 2.10/2.11/2.12 (?)
- gcc 2.95.x (ok) ( anyone w/ 3.x series experience ? )
- nasm 0.9x (0.98 ok)
- glibc -2.1.x / 2.2.x (2.2.5 ok ? )

and:
- mixed libmpeg stuff versions....
- mixed MAD lib, LAME, etc ...
- mixed AVI stuff
- mixed qtime stuff

Having P55 MMX K6 K7 compatible optimizations....

In such context what would be "best" ?

Currently I am trying to upgrade my messy mixed
system to binutils 2.12/glibc 2.2.5... trying to keep
old stuff running AFAP ...

BTW, I loved this black magic art ;-) :
