I'm currently in the process of picking up a BT8x8 TV tuner card for
Linux. One thing that always interested me was the ability of some TV's
and VCR's to show onscreen info such as station name, ratings, etc.

This stuff is known as XDS (Extended Data Service). I was wondering, is
it possible to access this information and have it come up onscreen in
XawTV or KWinTV?

After reading a bit about it, it seems that the info is in line 21 of a
cable signal, or in the Vertical Blank Interrupt. Would it be possible
to scan /dev/vbi and get the correct info? I assume that I would have to
decode the packets somehow.

Or is there some software that already does that? If not, I may be
interested in 'cutting my teeth' on such a project :) Any info/ideas
that anyone has on this subject is greatly appreciated. I think it would
be a cool feature to add to TV viewers.

Thanks,
Steve Anthony
