If you want "fast" you want console tools with plenty CPU, memory,
swap and every sort of tricks (MMX, 3Dnow, MTRR and all the bizz
things).

I've heard a lot of complains regarding Broadcast2000. But it
really works with MPEG1 streams no DVD stuff of course). 

You have to handle a "time line" editing tool and you have 
('had' because the project is gone) a wide range of effects 
and IMHO a good enough interface considering the fact
that is a GPL'ed tool (probably one of the best projects
in this area).
