Are you using the XFree drivers or the NVIDIA closed-source drivers?
If you're using the XFree drivers, check to see if DRM is enabled in
kernel configuration for your build.

If you're using NVIDIA's drivers, you must boot to the new kernel, and
rebuild & reinstall the drivers.
