Hi! I think the radio "solution" is just a workaround! On my card it just switches the sound output to the audio out of the tuner which outputs FM radio _and_ TV _mono_ sound. So please check whether the sound you get by the radio method is really stereo (as FM radio is). I doubt it.
For the card I have (Medion MD 9717) there is a special workaround signal source "TV mono only" which does nothing else but the radio workaround, i.e. it switches to the mono sound decoded by the tuner chip instead of using the saa7134 for decoding stereo sound. You could look at page 16 of http://pvr.sourceforge.net/FM1216.pdf That is the datasheet of the tuner used on my saa7134 board.
