I haven't noticed its poor quality on DVDs yet. It appears that the mplayer I have doesn't support -tv, I'm downloading the current version now and will try it out

If you meant 0x20000 then that's the mplayer linear blend filter.
Unfortunately, it gives very poor quality on high motion, and badly
blurs images. It's an option in tvtime 0.9.6 though :)
