I'd suggest to use a newer bttv driver. The current ones support
read() capture, and you can also use select() the usual way to wait
for data. non-blocking read() works too.
And, no, these features will never be backported to the 0.7.x driver
because the switch from 0.7.x to 0.8.x was basically a rewrite of the
driver core ...
