Turns out xvideo is causing the half-screen video problem with my G400. It took me awhile to get xvideo turned off. The interactions between "fullscreen" "-noxv" and "use-wm-fullscreen" in xawtv are quite a mess. "-noxv" doesn't actually get the job done, since it may still fob it off on the wm.
Anyway, for some reason if xvideo is enabled at 640x480 resolution then the video is mucked up. It gets squashed in various ways. Disabling xvideo (and use-wm-fullscreen), everything is happy again. At other resolutions xvideo appears to work ok. This bug might have existed before my rh8.0 upgrade.
