try 0.9.x, that should be less obscure than 0.7.x.

0.9.x allows to switch them at runtime, so you can run "xawtv -noxv",
bring up the option menu, play with the options and see what happens.

I don't know why this happens.  Guess the bt878 chip is somewhat
confused due to the input switch, so it may take a frame or two until
the chip gets the even/odd sync right again.
