Newbie question on Mini DV capturing

I would like to set up a live broadcast of a conference, which I intend 
to deliver using Helix DNA Server. I plan to use a Mini DV camcorder.

I see that many DV camcorders nowadays come with USB connection. 
Wondering how useful this could be to me, I came up with the following 
questions:
- Since the camera has got an USB connection, does this mean I don't
  need a video capture card anymore?
- What is the status of Linux in terms of USB support in Mini DV
  cameras? If it works, where can I find information on how to set up
  these devices?
