V4L for set-top?

Hi,

I'm trying to sort out the various Linux video alternatives, 
with a goal of choosing technology that would be appropriate
for a TV set-top device, where graphics will be composited
on top of video.

A few questions:

V4L1 doesn't support video output, correct ?

V4L2 has /dev/vout for output.  Are there any sample applications ?

Where can I find out more about Xv and how it relates to V4L* ?
