Thanks Gerd. I didn't know about Xvideo and grabbing.
Now it is working.
When using -noxv I also have my color, volume slide and the audio selector 
(mono/stereo) back. Things make sense to me now because the difference 
between the machines that I use is the use of Xvideo. I just didn't think of 
that being the reason :-)
